There can be 2-3 cubs in a litter, which stay with mother for 17-20 months, and when females are ready to mate they force the yearlings to stop going with them. The first cubs can be produced at the age of 3-10 years, depending upon food supply.

These animals are about 50-80 inches long and 2-3 feet at the withers; they weigh from 125 to 500 pounds, depending upon age, season and food, in captivity they may be larger. They mate in spring and the cubs are born in January or February. Bear black information may be enhanced by observing farm raised babies.
