Black bear behavior, food habits, and the number of babies may differ depending on the region as well as hunting laws.
The length of hibernation depends upon local weather condition and whether or not there is a lack of food during wintertime. Southern subspecies may not hibernate at all or do so for a brief time and northern subspecies spend up to 8 months in their dens.

In the wild these animals live up to 30 years, but due to hunting cubs may become orphans and die of hunger. The mortality of yearlings is rather high. These animals are usually solitary and forage alone unless there is abundance of food in one area.
