Bears are known to have poor eyesight although visual capabilities of each species may differ.
Smell is the most important sense a bear has. Its nose is a substitute for relatively poor vision.
No animal is known to have a more acute sense of smell than bears.
However, the most outstanding feature in bears is their enormous strength. A bear may kill an elk, or a deer by a single blow. Lifting the carcass of the prey in its mouth and carrying it for great distances is also in the power of a bear. Strength is an inseparable attribute of bears regardless of the species.
Bears - Senses - Life Span:
Wild bears live from 15 to over 30 years. In zoos, bears tend to live longer. A brown bear is known to have lived as long as 47 years.
Bears - Color
The coat color of bears is rather variable between species. Coloration differs even within species. Seasonal fading and shedding tend to introduce changes of the coat color in individual bears. A bear's under-fur may be brown. The outer hairs are usually tipped in black. Some bears come in a single color.
Bears - Diet
Bears hunt on mice, ground squirrels, and other small animals. They occasionally catch fish with their front paws. Some of their favorite dishes are ants, grubs, and birds' eggs. Berries, fruits, acorns, nuts, and the roots and leaves of plants are also a part of their diet. Bears are famous for their fondness of honey. Bears - General Information Links
