The joy of collecting pressing irons constantly amazes us. Over the past 30 years, we have built up our collection and are now buying, selling and frequently...trading quality antique pressing irons and laundry stoves.

We're particularly interested in acquiring unusual irons and laundry stoves. We have a particular fondness for brass and little irons.

  • Pressing Irons
  • Laundry Stoves
  • Pressing Iron Trivets
  • Iron Trade Cards
  • Books, Catalogs & Literature

Whether you have just a few irons or a large collection, we are looking for unique, quality pieces. We are also looking for relevant books, catalogs and other literature, not yet in our library.

We have listed a bibliography of books containing significant references to antique irons and laundry stoves. If you have knowledge of additional publications and would like to share that information with fellow collectors, please fax or email us that information at so that we may list them on this page.

If you are a collector and would like a FREE listing on this page so that other collectors may more easily contact you, please let us know so that we may also include that information on this page! There is, of course, no charge for this!

We are often asked how we got our name and if we could describe the nature of our buildings: The word "Shaker", in our case, comes from the fact that our farm (really a "gentlemen's farm") lies on the "Shaker Brook" and hence the name Shaker Brook Farm. Our collection is about 700 irons and 20 laundry stoves of varying sizes. We started collecting while living in Vienna, Frankfurt & Zurich for 10 years and then another 20 years in the US. In the past few years, we've added some exquisite childrens' miniature toy cookstoves!

The main house, in the center, is a Shaker style farmhouse built by Joseph Frost in 1792. We're working on a complete history of the house at the present time. Then there is an 1890's kitchen with all antique flooring and walls and then a glassed-in breezeway over to the museum where we spend most of our time at home.

The octagonal Shaker Barn, to the right, was built in 1977-78 as a museum to house the "Barenholz Toy & Folk Art Museum". Barney Barenholtz was one of the two founders of "Creative Playthings", a large American toy company. He passed away in 1989. The museum is 2,000 square feet and houses our living room, master bedroom, and the "collection". We've just posted pictures of our collection - museum. It's quite wonderful living amongst our "toys"!

The building to the far left is an 1890's barn that was converted to a two-bedroom guest house.

Have a question about irons? We'll certainly do our best to answer your questions or refer them to another qualified collector. HOWEVER, we receive HUNDREDS of inquiries and simply cannot answer all of them. We hope you'll understand! Excellent reference links to categories which we do not collect are indicated on the Streamlined Electric Irons, Wood Stove, Washing Machine and Ironrite Ironer pages where we do not have expertise. Please contact them directly.

We are often asked where the term "Sad Iron" comes from. "Sad" comes from the old English word "sadd" meaning "heavy". These irons are somewhat heavy...hence the name Sad Iron. It has nothing to do with the very probable "sadness" of the person doing the ironing! :-)

We do not give price estimates or appraisals. Price ranges of many irons are contained the books we sell or you may find them in your local library. For current antique iron bids on ebay™, visit our ebay™ Iron Search Page and click on the type of iron for which you are looking!

Sincerely,

Bill & Peggy Heyman

PS. You may view our collection throughout the year...by appointment only. Please call well in advance of your planned visit to make certain that we will be available.
